USCRC MBL/CSHL Course Funding: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for financial aid?
Please indicate on your application to MBL and CSHL that you are in need of financial aid. Our IBRO Committee provides funds to MBL and CSHL for distribution to students in need. The MBL and CSHL will notify students about available financial aid, which includes aid from our committee. If you have additional questions after receiving your financial aid notification from MBL and CSHL, please contact us.
How do I apply for the program?
Please apply through the regular MBL and CSHL process.
Is full funding available?
Full financial aid is often available. However, if a number of students are accepted into the program, we may not provide full funding for each of them. This will be decided after acceptance decisions are made by MBL and CSHL.
How do I improve my application?
The first thing is to realize this is a competitive program, with limited space. Although not required, a letter from someone the course directors may recognize could strengthen your application to the summer courses. We encourage you to ask an IBRO course instructor or another well known neuroscientist who knows you to write a letter for you to supplement the letters from scientists you work with at your own institutions. While not replacing a letter from your supervisor or others who have worked closely with you, this person may be able to describe your enthusiasm, English skills, and ability to succeed in the class. This letter does not replace the letters requested in the MBL and CSHL application but is an extra letter to help evaluate international students. MBL and CSHL are aware that applicants may include this additional letter.
If I was not accepted before, can I apply again?
You should definitely consider applying again as the applicant pool changes each year. We may be able to provide suggestions about how to strengthen your letters. Please make sure that your application letter covers the points requested in the application.
Can I apply to more than one course?
Yes, you can apply to more than one course, and you can apply to courses at both MBL and CSHL. Given the competitive nature of the course selection, this may be a good idea for you. If you are accepted into more than one course, you will most likely need to choose one course over the other.
