It is with great sadness that IBRO notes the loss of Professor Hans-Joachim Pflüger, or Jochen, who sadly passed away on 25 January 2022. On behalf of IBRO’s extended community, we send our heartfelt condolences to Jochen’s family and friends during this difficult time.

In addition to a research career as Professor of Neurobiology and Functional Neuroanatomy at the Freie Universität Berlin, Jochen volunteered his time and commitment during a significant part of his career in leadership roles for numerous European associations, including as President of the German Neuroscience Society and Treasurer of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. Within IBRO, Jochen also served in many roles throughout his career, including as member of the Western Europe Regional Committee (2009-2012) and the Pan-European Regional Committee (2013-2017), and then as IBRO Treasurer from 2017 to 2019. As past Treasurer, Jochen was a member of IBRO’s Finance Committee.

With a true commitment to IBRO’s mission and values, Jochen was a strong proponent for supporting the next generation of neuroscientists with opportunities for training and career development, specifically in areas of the world with limited resources. In line with this commitment, Jochen has organized and served as faculty in a long list of IBRO supported courses and programs during his career.

Jochen was a remarkable scientist and colleague with a caring and warm demeanor, who never ceased to be an impactful and respected colleague in IBRO’s central leadership during his many years of service to the organization. The IBRO community warmly thanks Jochen for his leadership and will greatly miss his expertise,” said Prof. Tracy L. Bale, IBRO President.
